At Proscia Dental in Bonita Springs FL, we make sure our patients have a complete understanding of our dental procedures for them to realize their significance and for them to be able to overcome their worries and fears.
What Is A Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment is a procedure performed to save a badly decayed or damaged tooth. When a tooth decays and the pulp is damaged, the bacteria multiply and spread, and can lead to an infection. This is the reason why it is vital for the infected pulp to be taken out. This is also a way to save the tooth without having to extract it.
Signs Of A Root Canal Infection
- A severe toothache, especially when there is pressure on the tooth or while chewing
- A persistent pimple on the gums
- Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
- Prolonged sensitivity to cold and hot temperatures
- Tender and swollen gums
During the treatment, the damaged pulp, and the nerve are removed from the inside of the decayed tooth so that the cavity can be cleaned. After cleaning the cavity, we will fill it in, and will seal it so that the tooth can start to function and look normal again.
Many patients put off getting a root canal done due to the fear of pain. But the fact is that the treatment itself is much less painful than the pain caused by a decayed tooth. After all, a local anesthesia will be administered before the procedure, so what is there to be scared of?
