Everyone knows what brushing is; however, not everyone may perform it the right way. There is more to brushing than just randomly moving the toothbrush bristles; it should effectively remove food debris and other substances that cling on the teeth - especially in between. So for everyone to perform the said habit properly, here are some tips.

Brush twice for two minutes every day

Make sure to brush the teeth twice a day for two minutes, preferably using a fluoridated toothpaste. That is to effectively get rid of factors that can irritate the gums, possibly leading to the development of gingivitis (an early form of gum disease).

Make sure not to miss any areas

When brushing, it is ideal for patients to make sure that all portions of the mouth, especially the hard to reach areas are cleaned. To make this possible, move the toothbrush methodically around the mouth. Cover the inside and outside portions of the teeth, as well as the chewing surfaces.

Be gentle

Think that brushing harder is better in removing harmful substances in between the teeth? Wrong. Doing so can cause the enamel to wear away instead. So, make sure to apply the right pressure and replace the toothbrush every three months for a more effective clean.

Know the correct angles

It is advised for patients to move the toothbrush in circular or elliptical motions and hold it at a 45-degree angle. Doing so cleans the area in the gum line effectively. To clean the inside portions of the teeth, hold the toothbrush vertically and make small circular motions.

Don't forget the gum line and tongue

Aside from the teeth, people should also keep their gum line in mind when since it is susceptible to the buildup of plaque. Make sure to brush this area and the ones between the teeth. To control the accumulation of plaque, make sure to floss. Another part of the mouth that deserves attention when brushing is the tongue. Cleaning the tongue helps in keeping a person breath fresh and also to remove bacteria further.

We at Proscia Dental highly recommend patients to schedule professional dental cleanings regularly. Despite the practice of proper brushing, some areas can be missed where plaque is left uneliminated - that is where professional cleaning comes in handy. The patient mouth will be thoroughly cleaned to get rid of plaque and prevent the formation of tartar; therefore, reducing or eliminating their risk of cavities and gum disease.
